VŠEOBECNÁ CHARAKTERISTIKA - Americký stafordšírský teriér by měl působit svou velikostí jako velmi silný pes. Měl by to být důkladně stavěný, svalnatý, ale pohyblivý a přívětivý pes. Má mít velký zájem o všechno, co se děje v jeho blízkosti. Měl by být podsaditý a svalnatý, neměl by mít příliš dlouhé končetiny nebo slabou postavu. Odvahu má příslovečnou.
HLAVA - Středně dlouhá, celkově silná s širokou lebkou, značně vyvinutým lícním svalstvem a výrazným stopem.
UŠI - Vysoko posazené, nekupírované (do 1. března 2004 bylo možno v ČR i kupírované ucho, ale novela zákona č.77/2004 Sb. na ochranu zvířat proti týrání od tohoto data kupírované ucho zakazuje). Nekupírované ucho má být krátké ve tvaru růžového lístku nebo polovztyčené. Klopené ucho je zakázané.
OČI - Tmavé a kulaté, jsou nízko posazeny v lebce a široko od sebe. Oční víčka musí být pigmentovaná.
MORDA/SKUS - Morda středně dlouhá, okrouhlá, pod očima ostře spadající. Čelisti se silnými zuby. Spodní čelist musí být silná a skus pravidelný. Pysky přilehlé a uzavřené, neuvolněné. Horní řada řezáků těsně bez mezery překrývá spodní (nůžkový skus). Nosní houba úplně černá.
KRK - Silný, lehce klenutý, od plecí se lehce zužuje k zadní části lebky. Bez volné kůže na hrdle. Střední délka.
PLECE - Silné a svalnaté s širokými, skloněnými lopatkami.
HŘBET - Značně krátký, mírně spáditý od kohoutku k zádi. Mírně skloněná krátká křížová kost (záď), lehce klenutá bedra.
TRUP - Dobře klenutá žebra jsou k sobě pevně vázána. Široká přední fronta. Hrudník široký a hluboký. Přední končetiny značně navzájem vzdálené, aby umožňovaly správný vývin hrudi. Hruď široká a hluboká.
OCAS - V poměru k tělu krátký, nízko nasazený a kuželovitě se zužující v jemnou špičku; není zkroucený ani nesený nad hřbetem. Nekupírovaný.
KONČETINY - Kosti předních končetin mají být rovné, silné a kulaté. Rovná předloktí. Zápěstí kolmá. Pánevní končetiny silné a dobře osvalené. Koleno poměrně nízko, nesmí být vybočené ani vbočené. Středně velké tlapy, dobře osrstěné a klenuté a uzavřené, pružné bez paspárků.
OSRSTĚNÍ - Srst je krátká, přilehlá, pevná, drsná na dotek a lesklá.
ZBARVENÍ - Jakákoli barva, jedna či více barev. Přípustná je i skvrnitost, srst by však neměla být zcela bílá nebo bílá z více než 80%. Černo-tříslová či černo-játrová se nedoporučují.
VELIKOST - Velikost a váha by měly být ve správných vzájemných proporcích. Doporučuje se výška v kohoutku psů 46 -
VADY - Jako vady by měly být posuzovány všechny následující uvedené okolnosti: tzv. Dudley nos (masově zbarvený nos), světlé oči a nepigmentovaná oční víčka, příliš dlouhý ocas nebo jeho špatné nesení, předkus a podkus.
